Slovenian Athletic Federation and NLB Ljubljana Marathon now work hand in hand

19. 12. 2024

This year, we concluded a partnership agreement between the NLB Ljubljana Marathon and the Slovenian Athletic Federation with the goal of connecting and creating a wider athletic community, jointly promoting athletics and athletes, and ensuring higher participation of fans in the stands and runners in running events.

Barbara Železnik, project manager of the NLB Ljubljana Marathon, accompanied the cooperation with the following words: "We consider the cooperation between the NLB Ljubljana Marathon and the Athletics Federation of Slovenia as an upgrade of existing activities, which creates added value on both sides. We expect that the cooperation will fill the stands of athletics stadiums and raise the recognition of the top selection of our athletes. On the other hand, we want the development and encouragement of the Slovenian top selection for long-distance runners, as this creates strong motivation for development, progress, and successful training. Timing Ljubljana has been supporting the AZS for many years and we want to capture super records in our measuring devices. We believe that we will jointly exploit the potential of cooperation to connect recreational and top-level athletics.«

In 2025, Slovenia will host the European Team Championships, and it will be the largest athletics competition in the history of Slovenia. We certainly want full stands of fans and the best performances of Slovenia's best athletes. We believe that there are a lot of fans of stadium athletics among the runners.

Primož Feguš, president of the Slovenian Athletic Federation, is looking forward to the cooperation and future challenges: "I think it is a natural coexistence of the NLB Ljubljana Marathon and the Athletics Federation of Slovenia. The cooperation has developed very well, and we will certainly build on the cooperation in the coming years, with a peak next year, when Slovenia will host the European Team Championships in Stadium Athletics for the 2nd and 3rd divisions, which will be held in Maribor, and we will continue in 2026 with the European Mountain and Trail Running Championships. "I would like to see the European Road Running Championships brought to Slovenia in the future, perhaps even as part of the Ljubljana Marathon, and combine this at an even higher level."
